Songs of the War

"Songs of the War" is a two-part slideshow featuring illustrations and commentary on the songs, speeches, and routines included on The Great War: An American Musical Fantasy. Written by Clarence Johnson, with help from Archeophone producers Richard Martin and Meagan Hennessey, the notes on these selections are generally close literary readings of the songs themselves, in the attempt to elucidate the way in which Americans were persuaded into supporting the Great War through recorded entertainment.

Each slide corresponds to a track on the 2-CD set, has an accompanying piece of sheet music or other illustrative graphic, and includes links to a brief sound sample from the track. When you select either a Real Media or Windows Media sound file, the media player will open in a separate window. Be sure to keep the player open, and when you subsequently click on other sound files, the player will operate in the background without interrupting you.

We hope you enjoy the presentation and that you will find it illuminates the material on our Great War CD.
