"I Don't Know Where I'm Going but I'm on My Way"

In a rollicking number that is likely better suited to the stage than anywhere else, this is the perfect recruiting song for a bond rally or a Four-Minute Man's introduction. It is absolutely a piece meant to focus on the "regulars" rather than the national guard (there was fierce rivalry between the two groups throughout the war). It dovetails into the notion of "Long Boy," who knows not what the war's about, but is sure to find out. The questioning is over; in this song, it's time to load the boat, the whistle of which we hear as the song fades out. It may be the first example of fade-out used in the recording industry.
