The debt the U.S. owed to France for her aid during the Revolutionary War was never far from the minds of Americans aware of the history of their country. When Pershing steps into France proclaiming "Lafayette, we are here," he is only echoing what he knows the American people and their soldiers feel. The wrongs of the German military against the innocent and not-so-innocent to the side, the long-dormant Revolutionary responsibility to the Marquis de Lafayette was a part of the impetus that drove our country to war. Having read the reports of the savagery of Ypres, the Somme, and the Marne for three years, guilt was a large part of the American rush to the front.
