"Oh! What a Time for the Girlies When the Boys Come Marching Home"

"Oh, What a Time for the Girlies" is a slightly naughty suggestion that now was the time for the young women of America, who had done their duty by doing without their men, to recreate by choosing one of the returning soldiers. "Oh what a time for the girlies," the song says, "when the boys come marching home. They'll get the kissing that they've been missing while they've been over the foam." We do not need to know who "they" are. Both of sides of this equation are willing. It is interesting, however, that with the advent of women's suffrage that more lyrics seemed to be willing to allow women to take the initiative in situations such as these. Note now that the war is over, the songs of homecoming celebrate in much the same fantastical way of denial as did the ones that ushered us into the fray.
