"Johnny's in Town"
by Arthur Fields

"Johnny's in town, Johnny's in town. / And oh, dearie, oh, dearie, he's been around" is the message of the excited young ladies in the lyric of "Johnny's In Town." In what seems an exercise in studied licentiousness, Johnny has been to the war, Johnny was decorated, Johnny "knows French and EVERYTHING." The effects of Johnny's savoir-faire as the result of being in France, Paris, abroad, would seem to be his cosmopolitan character made him more desireable and superior to the common man. Besides being good for the returning soldiers, it likely created substantial resentments among those who stayed at home. Another nuance becomes a feature of the social landscape.
