Similar to "He'd Have to Get Under—Get Out
and Get Under (To Fix Up His Automobile)," another
Murray hit about a car that continually breaks down,
"I Think I Oughtn't Auto Anymore" tells of
a car that is frequently in the shop and the reckless
driver who crashes it.
Murray recorded a number of songs about cars throughout
his career, "In My Merry Oldsmobile" (1905)
and "The Little Ford Rambled Right Along"
(1915) most famously among them. Henry Ford was apparently
green with envy over the popularity of "Merry Oldsmobile,"
a paean to the rival auto maker. He would have to wait
a decade until "Little Ford" immortalized
one of his creations—and then, of course, the
image of a Ford "rambling along" may not be
what he had in mind.
Further cementing the lasting appeal of "Merry
Oldsmobile," in 1932 Billy Murray did voiceover
work for a short advertising film for Oldsmobile, complete
with lyrics across the screen and a bouncing ball so
the viewer could sing along with Billy.
